Ladder Beams

Material Specifications: Commonly used materials are hot-rolled steel sections, such as ∠50×5" angle steel (5 mm thick, 50 mm side length), ∠60×40×3" rectangular tubes (60 mm x 40 mm cross-section, 3 mm wall thickness), and Φ30×3" round tubes (30 mm diameter, 3 mm wall thickness). The specific material used depends on the height and weight of the ladder. For ladders over 6 meters, it is recommended to use at least ∠63×6" angle steel, or a pipe of similar strength.

Spacing:The clear distance between the inside of ladder beams is generally between 300 mm and 500 mm, with 400 mm being the most common. This allows for the width of an adult's body when climbing and ensures a secure grip.

Rungs

Material Specifications: Round steel with a diameter of 20 to 25 mm (22 mm is common) or 3 mm thick flat steel (30 to 40 mm wide) is typically used. Round steel steps must be smooth and free of burrs, while flat steel steps may be provided with anti-slip ridges.

Spacing: The center-to-center distance between steps is 200 to 300 mm, with a standard spacing of 250 mm. The deviation between any two steps should not exceed ±5 mm to ensure a consistent climbing rhythm and avoid the risk of missing steps.

Length: The length of the steps should be 50 to 100 mm longer than the clear inner distance of the ladder beam, meaning that both ends of the steps should extend 25 to 50 mm beyond the ladder beam. Any excess should be hooked or welded with a limit stop to prevent the steps from falling.

Height and Safety

Rung Height: The height of a single rung should not exceed 6 meters. For steps exceeding this height, an intermediate resting platform must be installed. The platform width must not be less than the spacing between the step beams and must not be less than 600 mm. The platform guardrail must be at least 1050 mm high, and the distance between guardrail posts must not exceed 1000 mm.

Top guardrail: If the top of the steps is used as a working platform, a guardrail at least 1200 mm high must be installed. If the top is open, a 180 mm high kickboard must also be installed.

Common Specifications of Steel Ladders

Guardrail Installation: For steps exceeding 3 meters in height, guardrails must be installed 2.5 meters above the ground. The guardrail diameter should be between 700 mm and 800 mm. Horizontal rings should be made of 16 mm round steel, with a distance between rings of 300 mm to 450 mm. Vertical reinforcement bars must be made of 12 mm round steel, with at least four bars uniformly spaced. The safety cage must be installed continuously to the top of the ladder or resting platform. Connectors and Fixings

Welding Requirements: Ladder beams must be connected to steps, and to platforms or structural members, using full-depth welding. The weld height must be no less than 0.7 times the minimum thickness of the connected component, and must be free of slag inclusions and porosity. Critical joints must also undergo flaw detection.

Embedded Parts: Ladder fixings must be connected using expansion bolts (M16 or larger) or embedded steel plates. The embedded steel plate must be at least 10 mm thick, the anchor rod diameter must be at least 12 mm, and the embedded depth must be at least 150 mm.

Rust Prevention: All steel components must be treated with two coats of anti-rust primer and two coats of topcoat. For outdoor use, hot-dip galvanizing is recommended, with a zinc layer thickness of at least 85 μm.

Ladder Width: The clear width (the distance between the inner and outer sides of the ladder beams) is generally 400mm. This can be increased to 600mm for two-person climbing, but requires a separate design. ·

Anti-slip measures: The rungs can be knurled, drilled, or welded with anti-slip strips (Ø6mm round steel, with spacing of 10mm-15mm). This is especially necessary in humid environments.


Bottom protection: The bottom of the ladder should be no more than 300mm above the ground or a reference surface. If the ground is prone to water accumulation, a concrete foundation or elevated base should be installed. The foundation dimensions should be no less than 500mm x 500mm x 300mm (length x width x height).
